Organic Garden Diary Dec22—organic Garden in winter

How can I take plant cuttings when I move without taking the fire ants . I’m a very green/organic gardener.

I have treasured plants brought from the family home I sold a year ago. The plants have been thriving in the yard of the rent house I moved to but I discovered fire-ants all around. I want to take cuttings from when I move soon. . Any green ideas for organic gardening ?

Organic method to control garden critters?

I’m looking for an organic way to keep away the occasional rabbit, woodchuck and squirrel that venture through my fenced in yard to have themselves a midnight snack in my vegetable and flower gardens. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Organic Gardening and Raw Foods, Part 2

The highlight of part two is a chance to meet Leela’s mother (we call her Mommy), a 96-year-old organic gardener. You might think, “Well, what can a 96-year old really do outside?” Well, we’re here to tell you that this woman is incredible! She spends hours each day caring for her crops, strong and limber as many people decades younger. Part two also shows some neat (though brief) close-up footage of bees busily working a large wild thyme patch that sprung up on the ashram’s front lawn. Fascinating stuff! When Peaceful Valley first formed, there were two large bee colonies that had taken up residence in one of the building walls. Leela called a local beekeeper to see what could be done about them, and the man reportedly was astonished at the health of the colony. He attempted to integrate those colonies with his own, hoping to improve the health of his bees. Sadly, those once-healthy bees became sick and died off. With world bee population being quite a concern in these times (an important topic that we haven’t covered in depth here yet), it was encouraging to see so many healthy bees abuzz at the ashram during this visit. Perhaps local hives are regaining their health! For further info on the Ashram, visit www.LeelaMata.com. Upcoming topics include meditation, yoga, and more. leaf hoppers in organic garden?

What can I do, they are everywhere? I’ve already used a concoction of dish soap, red pepper, oil and water. I watched them return unfazed as soon as the leaves dried. I’ve heard row covers, but that is expensive and isn’t it way too hot for row covers now? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
I was checking around to find where to buy a praying mantis and ran across this. Poor lil humming bird……praying mantis is eating him. Hhttp://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/site/backyardbirds/hummingbirds/mantis-hummer.aspx?sc=birdwireJul2005Here is the link if you want to see it, it’s gross.

Survival Gardening 10, self reliance emergency preparedness

Video # 10 in our Survival Gardening series go over soils and soil improvement techniques. Video #11 will follow shortly. Unless you are keeping a herd of large animals like cows, it’s going to be very hard to keep grow food long term using just what’s “on” the farm or homestead. For a handful of raised beds, half dozen rabbits and similar number of chickens MAY provide enough fertilizer to keep your soil in good shape. But for a serious amount of ground, ie, enough to truly keep a family of 4 of so in food, it’s going to be next to impossible to produce ALL your fertilizer and soil amendments ON THE FARM or homestead. While I do NOT claim to be an “organic gardener”, most of these soil improvement techniques are similar to those used in organic gardening. As a rule, we do NOT use pesticides on our VEGETABLES. We have been forced to use them on our fruit trees before to SAVE TREES. So understand that just because we don’t do everything “organic” doesn’t mean we slather DDT on the ground everywhere….. www.survivalreport.net www.homesteadingandsurvival.com tags- gardening, soil improvement, manure, fertilizer, hard times, economic collapse, economic crisis, peak oil, end of oil, survivalist, homesteading, homestead, survival, 2012, bird flu, preparedness emergency, Patriots, Alex Jones, 911, Dow, market, food shortages, food storage, anything else that will bring folks in.
