I got a topsy turvy for my boss and he is all about living organic, so my question is do I need to start with all organic soil or can I get the regular soil and use just organic fertilizer?

Answer by Plumbersstock
soil for the most part is organic, as long as it has not been hit with too much chemical fertilizers. once you have made sure your soil is up to par, mix in your organic fertilizer, after all there is nothing better than an organic tomato, and nothing worse than an inorganic tomato.

What exactly is an organic garden?
Question by jane d: What exactly is an organic garden?
I have a small garden in my back yard. I have a compost pile that I use in the garden. I don’t use chemicals mostly because I don’t have much of a pest problem and the pests I do have are easily controlled without it. So does that make organic or is there something more?

Answer by Johnny
An organic garden means different things to different people. Mainly, an organic garden means growing plants without the use of synthetic fertilizers or non organic chemicals. If you only use compost or fertilizers such as fish meal, kelp meal, cottonseed meal etc and no chemicals, I would say you are growing organic plants. Other people may have different requirements such as how long has it been since the soil was farmed inorganically etc. Does it really matter what others think? Grow your plants in a manner that pleases you.

Going Green with Organic Garden
Category: Articles
It is a good reason for organic healthy gardening. Risks to pets, people and the environment are just beginning to be understood. It takes a little planning to become an organic farmer. Typical garden problems need to be proactively managed as opposed to correcting them after they happen.Toxic chemicals and pesticides can build up in your system or have long-term effects on your health. For example, pesticide exposure has been linked to nerve damage, cancer and birth defects.
By using the chemicals and pesticides, children and infants are at a dramatically increased risk for damage. Children have excretory systems that are still developing that means that they are less able to rid their bodies of chemicals consumed. The chemical damage can alter the biology of their bodies permanently, causing problem. Tissues and developing organs can suffer when chemicals block absorption of nutrients. So, it is a best step to avoid chemicals and pesticides in your garden towards protecting the health and well being of yourself and your family.

Our company is based in a region with many areas of heavy clay soil, which is problematic. Tricia says in our video that she is adding compost to the clay soil found in our local Sierra Nevada foothills. We suggest using a small amount of compost when planting in soil that is heavily clay or sand. In our Fruit & Nut Trees Planting & Growing Guide we note that: Clay drains poorly and sand does not retain moisture and nutrients. The addition of organic material (well-aged, high quality composts or green manures) will loosen clay soils to allow for improved drainage and will also create an efficient substrate to retain moisture and nutrients in overly sandy soil. While recent studies indicate that over-fertilization can be detrimental, we recommend the addition of 15–20% organic matter to poor soils, as nothing is gained by planting in unamended clay or sand. www.groworganic.com UC Extension, Sacramento County says: [T]horoughly …
