From seed to loaf (part 1 of 2) allotment scale production of bread making wheat

This video is about small-scale wheat production using modified garden machinery and a home-built threshing machine. I grow my own wheat and make bread not because its 10% cheaper but because I think its 100% better – and it gives me great satisfaction. Growing wheat this way is an indulgence as it requires a certain amount of land, if space is tight growing vegetables and salad crops makes more sense. If you want to try yourself, please check first to see if wheat will grow in your area. Enjoy whatever you grow and remember -look after the land and the land will look after you.

VVH-TV News Special Organic Farming: Can It Feed Us? Part 2 Karl Grossman Chief Investigative Reporter examines Organic Farming on Eastern Long Island. What is organic farming? Organic farming can be defined as an approach to agriculture where the aim is to create integrated, humane, environmentally and economically sustainable agricultural production systems. Maximum reliance is placed on locally or farm-derived renewable resources and the management of self-regulating ecological and biological processes and interactions in order to provide acceptable levels of crop, livestock and human nutrition, protection from pests and diseases, and an appropriate return to the human and other resources employed. Reliance on external inputs, whether chemical or organic, is reduced as far as possible. In many European countries, organic agriculture is known as ecological agriculture, reflecting this reliance on ecosystem management rather than external inputs. The objective of sustainability lies at the heart of organic farming and is one of the major factors determining the acceptability or otherwise of specific production practices. The term ‘sustainable’ is used in its widest sense, to encompass not just conservation of non-renewable resources (soil, energy, minerals) but also issues of environmental, economic and social sustainability. The Basics of Natural Farming (part 1 of 2)

This video is about a garden I started in Preston Hollow, NY after reading Masonobu Fukuoka’s “One-Straw Revolution” and applying those theories and practices to vegetable gardening. To view part 2, please follow this linnk: www.youtube.com I grew fresh vegetables for a small CSA (Community Shared Agriculture) , local markets and my friends and family. Much of my gardening practice coincides with the principles of permaculture. No-till farming creates permanent planting areas, in this way, one can incorporate perennial growing alongside the annuals. Artistically, I was inspired by Carl Sagan’s Cosmos and the work of David Attenborough, which I grew up adoring as a child. I find it ironic how modern media was one of the original gateways to my increasing curiosity about nature, though perhaps this is what I hope to mimic by putting together my personal story with this garden.
